Utahraptor is a genus of large dromaeosaurid dinosaur that lived in North America during the Early Cretaceous period. It was a heavy-built, ground-dwelling, bipedal carnivore. It contains a single species, Utahraptor ostrommaysi, which is the largest-known member of the family Dromaeosauridae.

The first specimens of Utahraptor were found in 1975 by Jim Jensen at the Dalton Wells quarry in east-central Utah, near the town of Moab, but they did not receive much attention. After the discovery of a huge toe claw by Carl Limoni in October 1991, James Kirkland, Robert Gaston, and Donald Burge discovered additional remains of Utahraptor in 1991 at the Gaston Quarry quarry in Grand Country, Utah, within the Yellow Cat and Poison Members. Cedar Mountain Formation Strip.

Utahraptor was a large dromaeosaur. It was about 2 metres tall, 6 metres long, and weighed about 1,100 pounds. Its skeletal design was like that of a modern turkey or chicken. Its bones were hollow, but strong.

The Utahraptor was the largest dromaeosaurid that has ever existed, at more than 7 meters long.

Despite its large size, the Utahraptor was a lean, agile and light bipedal racer. Its body, reminiscent of the first birds, was characterized by long arms with sharp claws. The chest was short and located in a horizontal position. The Utahraptor's head was robust and its jaws were very powerful and full of small, sharp, serrated, and curved teeth, ideal for ripping flesh. Their eyes were located in a middle position between the lateral and the frontal, which allowed to calculate the distances well but without sacrificing the peripheral vision. Judging by its large brain, the Utahraptor had enough intelligence to hunt in groups, and they also reveal that it had good vision that allowed it to detect not only large prey and calculate where they are, but also to detect smaller prey such as lizards. or mammals and capture them. Its sense of smell was also very fine and it could detect prey several kilometers away.

The tail, also short, was endowed with great mobility in the area near the croup, but was very rigid in the three posterior quarters thanks to some bone rods and welded vertebrae; but this characteristic allowed to keep the tail immobile and to have it fixed in one direction, which gave a great balance to the animal. In addition, this feature made the tail heavier, which balanced its long arms.

The pubic bone of this animal was directed backwards in a very marked way, very similar to the pubis of modern birds. The sturdy and very flexible legs ended in a foot that rested on three toes; the second toe of its legs (it had four fingers) was the bearer of a colossal claw that the animal preserved when running, since it flexed the finger up and back, a fact that caused only half of the finger. The second toe of the Utahraptor housed a huge sickle-shaped claw that measured a foot and a half in length (specifically 22 cm, but we have to add the horny layer that covered the claw, so the size of this reached 26 cm) .

Their total length was 7 meters long and they weighed about 500 kg. Some undescribed specimens in BYU collections appear to reach 11 meters long, but they are still awaiting more detailed studies.

It is possible that this huge specimen was a large male or the holotype is a small female or a juvenile specimen (since the specimen is very rare, all theories may be feasible). It is believed that if Utahraptor really were capable of reaching such a size, it would have prevented him from developing the speed and agility that commonly characterize dromaeosaurids, and jumping on prey with open jaws could have broken the skull, since it was very weak.

There is no proof that the Utahraptor had any type of plumage, so there are several theories about it, but all lead to this animal perhaps having feathers.

It is possible that the Utahraptor did not have feathers, since it is large enough to regulate body temperature by itself without requiring some type of plumage, but there is a flaw in this theory, since there were larger dinosaurs with feathers, such as the Yutyrannus or the Gigantoraptor. The idea that he lost his feathers by acquiring a different method of attraction for a partner is also being considered. Still, the desert habitat of the Utahraptor had extreme temperatures, a point in favor of the feathers. In addition to all this, it is worth noting its phylogenic position, since all its relatives were feathered.

Hunting technique

The Utahraptor were one of the most ferocious carnivores mainly due to the claws they had on their legs, which could be very long and had an edge as if they were razors. The most interesting thing was the way he used them, in the first place being so big when he ran to catch his prey he had a mechanism to lift it and not drag it, this ability to save his claw made it work more or less like a razor that he could pull out when he needed it most. A single cut from its powerful claws could seriously injure any prey. Only this characteristic already made it fearsome enough, now if we take into account that it also had very powerful teeth that were about the size of a finger, we can imagine how effective it was for hunting.

A third characteristic that made it even more fearsome is that its arms were long, much longer than human arms, this is important especially if we take into account that most predators had very short arms. The Utahraptor's claws had three toes with very sharp claws sharp. And if all this were not enough he was a very agile runner.

Utahraptor was only 20 ft in length and 1100 lbs.

In the game

Utahraptor is a very powerful small carnivore, it is extremely powerful, the most lethal thing is that many are in command, it is very fun to play, it is not a creature with which you would like to find yourself alone, much less in herds, they can easily shoot at small creatures of the game, although they are weak, and any large and strong dinosaurs can kill entire herds
